Thank you for this tute - I use Elements, so it's great to see something written for Elements users. That adjustment layer at the end with the contrast really makes a difference, I will try to do this more often.

I made two icons, one started with a sepia-tone photo (*points to user pic for this post*), and one with a colour photo:
